My first reaction to the news of the ‘sterilisation bribe’ for addicts and alcoholics was complete horror. Imagine my complete amazement when I went on to read that this is justified by a concern for the unborn children who will invariably be born with brain damage and be addicts themselves.
My first question is – how does this apply to men as well as women, as it is the mother’s addiction that causes the greatest risk. Face it – a lot of women in the situation we are talking about, who might trade their sexuality, will invariably have partners who are not addicts. How has this helped?
Second – how is this seriously helping an addict? How is it helping crime rates? What if the addict recovers and goes on to lead a very productive life? By all means make reversible sterilisation procedures available to anyone and everyone, but offer them free of charge. Give away condoms, offer free IUDs and other female contraceptives. By paying an addict you are giving them money to fuel their addiction. Using their very problem to further your own agenda. There is something very devious and sly about the whole process.
Third – if we accept this reasoning then where does it stop? Seriously, consider it. Don’t want babies with problems…?
There is so much more I could say on this but I have a nasty taste in my mouth already. There are better solutions. Ones that won’t compound the problem. This will not stop new addicts. It will not stop unwanted pregnancies.
You may say I can talk as I haven’t experienced the problem first-hand. You are right, I haven’t, but because I have not brought up a clutch of children whose mothers were addicts I am in a position to look at this without any personal trauma colouring my view and I see a recurrence of the early 1900’s eugenics trials which led, as we all know, to one of the most horrific abominations in Europe.
