Regurgitating Words

OK, the reason I’ve started blogging: I’ve written a book.  Well, I’ve written two actually.

My husband convinced me to start in November last year (2009) and in December, in between work, kids, shopping and Christmas, I started on a couple of ideas.  They’re still there, but unfinished, because in January I woke up one morning, gripped my pen and this particular story just poured out of me.  I couldn’t stop it.  Every day when I woke up I thought I knew what would happen in the book but, lo and behold, it went off and did its own thing.  It was organic; I couldn’t train it as I might the passion fruit in my garden.  The plot twisted and turned, it became unintentionally steamy; I couldn’t prevent it from happening, the characters were doing things I hadn’t even conceived of.

4 weeks, one dirty house and starving family later I had finished it.  I spent the rest of February typing it up – yes, I know!  Why didn’t I type it up in the first place?  Well, that’s not the way it happened and I can’t explain it, but the imaginaiton section  of my brain only speaks to my hand when it is writing.

After I typed it up it was full of spelling and grammar mistakes – mainly because I type too fast and exceedingly badly – and I haven’t been back to read it.  But I still printed off a copy and gave it to my mother-in-law who loved it.  I feel I am only now ready to go back and correct it.  The book is too alive for me to have done it any sooner, I would just get caught up in the characters and their lives again.

I proofed the first three chapters and am in the process of sending it off to agents, so let’s see what happens.

The book?  It’s called Golden Obsession.  Maybe I’ll post a section if I get enough requests…..

In the meantime I have finished another novel (without a name).  The characters and situation they found themselves in drove me to tears; it was very emotional so I was glad to finish it.  I haven’t typed it up as yet.

I have also started on a YA novel and a teen novel as well as the other two I started in November.

My 10 year old daughter is upset as they are all far too adult in material for her to read.  I have promised to cut out the sex scenes and douse it a little so she can read it – it may be a while before they are ready for her.

Goodnight.  Thanks for listening.

About Bea Turvey apprentice author and witch

I am a wild-haired author who cannot stop writing. The writing process is not a task for me. It is an extension of myself. When I write, I lose myself as easily as if I slipped into the story for a swim. Writing became a serious part of my life in Decmber of 2009. Unless you're reading this in 2017 it wasn't that long ago, and the bug hit me hard and fast. My first novel, Banished, was published in March 2010 and is available at If you read it, or anything else I've written, I hope you'll post a review and let me know why you liked it - or even why not!
